Solid waste is a national global problem that can be seen in many countries. The generation of huge amount of solid waste has becoming a growing case. The city of Visakhapatnam is also facing a serious threat to its eco-friendly atmosphere due to increase in level of solid waste generation. The present study served as a classical example of solid waste management using eco-friendly technique i.e Effective Microorganisms (EM) technology. A layer of Actinomycetes confirms the activation of EM, done by adding jaggery. Animal, domestic and plant wastes collected were kept in composting bins by intermediate spraying of activated EM solution for 30 days. The prepared compost was also tested with three seeds namely Brassica nigra (Black Mustard), Trigonellafoenum-graecum (Fenugreek) &Triticum(wheat) by measuring the plant growth, root length and leaf length. The results of the study demonstrated that the compost prepared from the waste was better when compared with the control. It can be concluded that the conversion of wastes to compost is a low cost method of waste disposal.
