Abstract

The black cumin (Nigella sativa) and the Javanese turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.) have been empirically utilized by the public as hepatoprotectors and antioxidants. Preparation of a combination of black cumin, Javanese turmeric, and honey (CXBC) has been developed as adjuvant therapeutic agent. This combined preparation is expected to promote antioxidant and blood sugar control activities, So the herbal combination can expected used to decrease stunting in Indonesia. This research sought to figure out the effect of 28-day CXBC preparation administration on hemogram profile, liver and kidney function, and blood sugar levels.

This research is experimental with a posttest-only control group research design. A total of 30 male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into six groups: group I served as normal control group, and groups II–VI did as treatment groups. CXBC preparation was administered orally at five dosages (i.e., 0.09, 0.45, 2.25, 11.25, and 22.50 mL/kgBW) for 28 days. On day 29, measurements of hemogram profile, liver and kidney function, and blood sugar levels were carried out. A mean difference test between groups with ANOVA was conducted at a 95% confidence interval.

The test results showed that the hemogram profile, kidney function, liver function, blood sugar levels, and fat levels were within the normal limits. There were no differences in hemogram profile, SGOT levels, SGPT levels, blood sugar levels, and fat levels between the treatment and normal control groups (p > 0.05).

The 28-day CXBC preparation administration did not cause any liver, kidney, and blood function disorders, and neither did it increase blood sugar levels in the Sprague Dawley rats: combined Nigella sativa and Curcuma xanthorrhiza preparation; liver function; honey; hyperglycemia; Stunting
