Abstract

Background: Psychiatric nursing is a specialized field that involves caring for individuals with mental health disorders. Nurses working in psychiatric settings encounter various legal and ethical challenges while providing care to patients. Ensuring that staff nurses possess adequate knowledge of legal and ethical aspects is essential to deliver safe and effective psychiatric nursing care. Objective: The main objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on improving the knowledge of staff nurses regarding legal and ethical aspects in psychiatric nursing. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test assessments will be employed in this study. A convenient sample of staff nurses working in selected hospitals in Jaipur will be recruited for the study. Prior to the structured teaching programme, a pre-test will be conducted to assess the baseline knowledge of the participants regarding legal and ethical aspects in psychiatric nursing. Following the teaching programme, a post-test will be administered to evaluate the improvement in knowledge. The structured teaching programme will be developed based on the identified areas of legal and ethical concerns in psychiatric nursing. Results: The data collected from pre-test and post-test assessments will be analyzed using appropriate statistical methods to determine the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, such as paired t-test, will be used to compare the knowledge scores before and after the intervention. Conclusion: The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme in enhancing the knowledge of staff nurses regarding legal and ethical aspects in psychiatric nursing. The results will contribute to the development of evidence-based educational interventions aimed at improving the quality of psychiatric nursing care and ensuring adherence to legal and ethical standards in clinical practice. The study's implications may also guide nursing educators and policymakers in designing comprehensive training programs for psychiatric nursing staff to meet the growing challenges in mental healthcare delivery.
