Knowledge Awareness and Perception on Regenerative Endodontics among General Dentists and Specialists

Abstract

Introduction: Regenerative endodontics is perhaps the most energizing advancements in dentistry today and
endodontists are at the front line of this forefront research. It has been defined as “biologically based procedures
designed to replace damaged structures, including dentin and root structures, as well as cells of the pulp-dentin
complex”. The purpose of the study was to know about the awareness and practice of regenerative endodontics
among dentists and specialists in India.
Methodology: This cross sectional survey was conducted during June to August 2021 including general dentists
and endodontic specialists. Response was obtained from 253 participants. Ethical permission to carry out the
study was obtained from Saveetha University Scientific review board. Snowball sampling method was used to
distribute the questionnaire among the participants. The questionnaire consisted of 16 questions which were
designed in such a way to evaluate the awareness, knowledge and attitude of regenerative endodontics.The
questionnaire had 16 questions in which 11 questions based on knowledge, 5 based on attitude, 6 questions based
on practice were created. 253 responses were assessed and the output was represented in a bar chart for each and
every question
Results: In this study, 51 fellowship endodontists were aware of regenerative endodontics out of which few were
able to perform regenerative endodontic therapy. Nowadays even though we have advancements in dentistry, the
growth of regenerative endodontics haven’t fulfilled the expectation in the field.
Conclusion: Most of the general dentists and endodontic specialists these days are aware of the practices of
regenerative endodontics and show a responsible attitude towards these procedures. But most of the general
dentists lacked confidence in practicing regenerative endodontic procedures.
